Description

Please join us Thursday, May 24 at 7 PM to welcome award-winning writer and storyteller Mark Binder as he presents a program of amusing and heartwarming tales for adults. The evening of storytelling is hosted by Congregation Etz Chaim and the Samuel Osher Memorial Library at 36 Bacon Street in Biddeford. "My stories are like rye bread," Binder explained. "You don't need to be Jewish to enjoy them." For more than 20 years, Binder has been writing and performing stories around the world. As a writer, Binder creates vivid tales that can be read and reread. As a storyteller, his work is vibrant and alive in the moment. "I don't memorize a script," he explained. "I don't do true stories like The Moth. I prefer to tell fictions as if they're real, and take listeners into the universal space of folklore and tall tales. Sometimes my stories sneak over the edge of reality like Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. The author of nearly two dozen books and audio books for adults, families and children, Binder lives in Providence, Rhode Island and is recently back from a world tour that included England, Ireland, France and the Netherlands. "If you've never heard a live storyteller, come and listen," he said. "For a brief moment time vanishes and the listeners vanish and the teller vanishes and all that exists is a story." The event is free and open to the public. The program will run from 7 to 8 PM. Dessert and coffee will be served after the storytelling. Mark will be answering questions and signing copies of his recent books and audio recordings following the program. The Library will be open from 6:30-6:55 PM and after the program until 8:30 PM.
