One of the more well-known rituals of Hanukkah is placing the candles in the window to publicize the miracle. For a tradition built on a narrative of miracles, why is the command to publicize specifically associated with the holiday of Hanukkah? We will explore the centrality of publicity to the holiday of Hanukkah, as well as what may be the core underlying question of the holiday: what is the miracle that we are celebrating anyway?
